Multiple Visions. One City.

A project by the Arts Management master students

of Istituto Europeo di Design, Roma (IED)

Theme

Express multiple visions of the identity of Rome as an ever-changing organism, through a specific sense or a specific part of the body.

Aims of the call

  • To explore the contemporary vibe of Rome and its diversity;

  • To give the opportunity to emerging artists to express their vision of Rome;

  • To capture different perceptions of Rome through art in a moment in time.

Description

Rome, as any other modern city, is an organism. It is composed of many different elements working together in one big cycle, where each element affects the other. Human beings take part in this constant process of evolution and adapt to the environment around them. Likewise, Rome changes its identity through time by reacting to its inhabitants.

For many centuries the eternal city has accepted multiple cultural influences and has become a patchwork of different time layers and international characters. Contemporary Rome is a vast confusion. There is no shared definition of its identity, because of the variety of the elements that make the city what it is.

Our perception of the place we live in is formed through our senses. We see Rome. We hear Rome. We smell Rome. We taste Rome. We touch Rome. All characteristics of the city determine its identity.

The identity of Rome has an effect on us; in return we, its inhabitants, take part in forming its identity. The cycle continues. And yet we all perceive Rome differently.

For this reason, we challenge emerging artists between 18 and 35 years based in Rome, to propose in a work of art their view on the identity of Rome as an organism in constant evolution and define how they are a part of it. All submissions will be reviewed and a selection will be exhibited at SET Spazio Eventi Tirso from the 13 to the 15 February 2015. The exhibition will feature works that express multiple visions of the identity of Rome through a specific sense or a specific part of the body. The diffusion process will continue online through our international network until the end of the month.
